Peeping Toms on the Rise: How Spyware Can Stop the Crime

Peeping Toms have always been around—even long before the glass bedroom window was invented. But lately, the number of perpetrators of these crimes are growing—thanks in part to the advent of the cell phone.

Cell phones with cameras have been a common accessory in our culture for well over a decade. They have brought great joy to those who wish to have a camera ready and at a moment’s notice and then want to send the pic to a loved one or friend. But what about the seedy side of this tech?

Perverts have been utilizing this technology to snap shots of women—both young and old—when they are not looking. The more forward and disgusting criminals have even gone on to slip the camera phones under or over the bathroom stalls of women in public restrooms and upload them to the internet for all to see. Some walk behind unsuspecting women in stores and take pics of them from under their skirts or dresses and load them to the internet under the title/hashtag/keyword “upskirts”.

It’s disgusting—and it’s not going away. Someday in the future, we may all have organic software in our bodies and retinal cams that can record everything we see without anyone knowing. But until then, we have seeable, graspable man-made hardware that can and will be noticed.

According to SFGATE, “Palo Alto police arrested an accused peeping Tom on Monday, charging he tried to take a cell phone photo of woman in her bathroom earlier this year, authorities said.

Around 6:30 p.m. on July 21, a woman called 911 from the 400 block of Grant Avenue, near the Stanford University campus, police said.

The victim, a woman in her 50s who was not identified by police, told investigators she had just gotten out of the shower and was getting dressed when she saw a cell phone outside her window pointed at her.

Officers were able to identify a suspect, 22-year-old Palo Alto resident Norbu Norbu, and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office filed a misdemeanor charge of peeping against him.”

Another similar crime happened in Alabama recently. A 33-year-old man was caught taking pictures of underage girls in the ladies room of a local restaurant. He was chased down by the girl’s mom and several other patrons. When they got a hold of his phone, they found over two-dozen photos of underage girls and one woman.
